"Nishine Shrine"and "Dango-sashi"

"Nishine Shrine"

Nishine Shrine was built in the beginning of the Meiji era to worship Zenbei Furukawa and Shinemon Sato as deities. They cultivated the Shintatsu District and were called the father of the cultivation.

"Donto Sai and Donto-yaki"

The practice occurs on January 14-15. This kind of festivals are held all over the country except Hokkaido and northern part of the Tohoku region. This festival is also called "Dondo-yaki" or "Doudo" It's called "Sagittyo" in the western part of Japan.

"Dango-sashi"

It's practice piercing "Dango"(rice cake) or decorations into branches of the tree and offer them to the household Shinto alter. "Dango-ichi"(market) is also held at Fukushima Inari Shrine. "Dango-sashi" is an event of the lesser New Year's Day. Zenbei Furukawa and Shinemon Sato have been worshipped as deities.

Zenbei Furukawa Shigeyoshi (1576-1637)

He was born in Nagano, then came to Fukushima as a feudal commissioner and the magistrate. He opened up irrigations. He also encouraged people to ship goods by the Abukuma River. Later he built riverbank in the Okabe village. He gave all the money he had to build Nishine Weir. To complete the Weir, he diverted part of the construction allowance from Uesugi clan. Because of that he is said to have died committing seppuku.

Zenbei Furukawa Shigeyoshi

Shinzaemon Sato (1573-1637)

He was born in Kori-machi. He served Kagekatsu Uesugi and ruled neighboring 40 villages. He did his best to build "Nishine Zeki" with Zenbei. He was also known as a brave commander. He died of sickness.
